The Hillman Opera, produced each year by the Fredonia School of Music in conjunction with the Hillman Memorial Music Association, is breaking new ground this year with a unique production in an online format. The production of “Beatrice and Benedict” will be available starting Nov. 27 on the School of Music’s YouTube channel, noted opera producer and Fredonia alumnus Dr. Robert Strauss of the School of Music.

The entire campus and community of Fredonia will be recognized virtually by the Fredonia College Foundation for their efforts to raise money in support of students at a time of need during the coronavirus pandemic when National Philanthropy Day is commemorated in Western New York on Nov. 19.

The National Opera Association announced that Fredonia’s 2019 Hillman Opera production of “Centrillion” by Jules Massenet, with the libretto by Henri Cain, has earned First Place in Division III of the association’s annual opera production competition. A total of 12 awards were presented to productions at colleges and universities nationwide.

The Institute for Composer Diversity (ICD), based at the Fredonia School of Music, has been chosen as a recipient of a $100,000 Sphinx Venture Fund (SVF) grant for 2021. The Detroit-based social justice organization is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts.

Eric Guo, 18, from Toronto, is First Prize Winner of the Fifth Claudette Sorel Piano Competition, conducted by the Fredonia School of Music on Sunday, Nov. 8.

Three of the Fredonia School of Music’s jazz faculty, including the head of Jazz Studies, Dr. Nick Weiser, John Bacon on drums, and Elliott Scozzaro on saxophone, as well as Fredonia undergraduates, will be featured during a Nov. 12 performance hosted by the Fredonia Jazz Society.

The College Student Personnel Association of New York State has announced the recipients of its 2020 awards, which recognize outstanding student affairs practitioners and scholars in New York State.

Professor Christian Bernhard of the School of Music has written a book, “Managing Stress in Music Education: Routes to Wellness and Vitality,” published this month by Routledge Focus.
